A MacArthur “genius” fellow, Majora Carter has devoted her career to finding environmental solutions that will alleviate poverty through green economic development and community empowerment. A lifelong resident of the South Bronx in New York, she founded the not-for-profit corporation Sustainable South Bronx in 2001. Among many other accomplishments, Carter led a successful campaign to build the first new South Bronx waterfront park in over sixty years. In 2003, she initiated the creation of the Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training Program (BEST), one of the nation’s first urban green-collar job training and placement systems. Carter is currently President of the green-collar economic consulting company, the Majora Carter Group, LLC.
